Lego Movie Game rated PEGI 7 (unlike the film which is rated U)
Although The Lego Movie was rated Universal (U), The Lego Movie Game was awarded '7' years of age. This is because the game includes 'non-realistic looking violence towards fantasy characters' and 'violence that is set in a cartoon, slapstick or child like setting that could be upsetting to very young children'.
Explain two reasons why a film company would release a video game linked to the film? (4)
One reason why a company would release a video game linked to the film is to maximise profit. This is because fans that enjoyed the film will want to know more about it and consume more media surrounding it. Another reason a film company would release a video game linked to the film is to reach mass audiences. This is because people who play a lot of video games might play the game leading them to see sections of the movie and enjoy it, therefore they decide to watch the film.
Purchasing the game provided childhood nostalgia for parents and allowed them to play with their children. This also illustrates how the audience for video games might interpret the same product differently, e.g. young children and old getting different pleasures from the product.
Arguably the target audience for the video game is younger then the film. This can be seen through its level of difficulty, which provides a younger audience with an entry profit to the franchise, without needing to watch the film. The narrative of the game takes elements of the film however it lacks the cohesion and humour of the film.
How can you apply the Uses and Gratification Theory to The Lego Movie video game?
The Lego Movie video game links to entertainment, and in particular escapism. This is because audiences who, for example, might have struggles in real life. Therefore, when playing the video game, they can leave their struggles and enter a world where they can be who they want and save the world. For example, girls (or anyone playing) can play as Wyldstyle, where they aspire to be a strong women who is independent and doesn't rely on anyone but herself. This reflects a changing society that accepts everyone and treats anyone equally, no matter of their gender.
Additionally, it also links to social interaction. This is because a multiplayer option is available, so audiences can make friends online and play with them digitally. Also, people who play the game can bond and relate to others who also play in real life. For example, someone who may not have many friends might make new friends due to the common interest they both share and conversation starter.
Lastly, it links to information. This is because the game teaches you societies norms and values. For example, the main objective is to save the world, as well as meeting and helping people along the way. This informs young players that being a good person is something aspire to be and value and if they are, they will be rewarded. However, a downside to this is that it may portray a hyperbolic view of being a good person that is impossible to live up to.
